Description:

Gifted and twice-exceptional youth may experience greater vulnerability to soothing behaviors due to the capacity for intense epigenetics (sensory prints). In addition, the lack of executive functioning, social/emotional control, and perhaps even social isolation can also be contributing factors and can lead in the search for alternative coping mechanisms.

This two part webinar will take a deeper look at this topic with experts Pam Lanhart, the founder and executive director of the non-profit organization Thrive, who will share her own story of her gifted son Jake’s addiction, Oncologist Dr. Robert Setlik, who also has expertise in Pharmacology and will share the effects of addictive substances on the brain/body, and Dr. Michael Postma who will share his work on metacognition.

They will explore the following topics and themes:

  1. Why might gifted/2e children/young adults be more vulnerable to addictive behaviors
  2. How can we empower a positive sense of self in our students/children
  3. What can we do to teach our gifted/2e students to make healthy choices
  4. How can we better communicate with our children
  5. What happens to the brain and body when an addictive substance is taken
  6. What are the short and long term effects of both legal and illegal foreign substances
  7. How can we develop techniques of prevention
  8. Where to turn for help

Meet Pam Lanhart:

As a mother whose teenager was impacted by substance misuse, Pam Lanhart became a fierce advocate for families impacted by addiction.  The valuable lessons she learned early on shaped the work she does today as the Executive Director of the non-profit Thrive that exists solely to assist families going through the difficult journey of substance use or mental illness in their families.  You will not only hear Pam and her son Jake's story, but you will leave with valuable information regarding early intervention and some simple tools that you can help and support your child when you first discover they might be presenting signs of
struggle.

Meet Dr. Mike Postma:

Hello! I'm Dr. Mike Postma, an educator, speaker, author, consultant and coach residing in beautiful Bellingham, WA.  Together with my wife, Julie, we have raised our own 4 gifted/2e children and know how difficult this journey can be.  That is one reason I have dedicated my life work to the holistic development of the gifted/2e community.  In my 25+ year career, I've served as a Gifted Teacher in the classroom, as an Administrator of gifted schools, as a professional developer of gifted programming and curriculum and as Executive Director of the SENG organization (Supporting the Emotional Needs of the Gifted), and now leading our company Gifted & Thriving, LLC.  I look forward to spending time together with you to  learn how we can best teach and support this exceptional community so we can all move from a place of just surviving to THRIVING!  I look forward to the journey with you!
