Description:

Gifted programming may be prevalent in the United States, however, the types of programs differ widely. Have you ever wondered what is happening in your child’s classroom to meet their intellectual needs? What are the most effective practices employed in successful gifted programs? What are the best models? As a parent (and sometimes even an educator) we don’t always know or understand the type of instruction our students are receiving. Does the pedagogy include differentiation? What exactly does that mean? Does that include grouping strategies? Is it a pull out model or an inclusive model? How is specific progress assessed? Is it about achievement or potential? A large portion of gifted programs at the elementary level tend to be weekly pull-outs with some advanced learning opportunities at the secondary schools. Is this comprehensive enough?

In the first part of this webinar, we will examine the different practices used to address gifted and multi exceptional needs. We will learn about the what is effective, what is not, and everything in between. We will also look at the subtle differences within effective practice for gifted students versus those with exceptionalities. In the second part, we will look at the different types of gifted models of education from Renzulli’s Enrichment Triad Model to Bett’s Autonomous Learner Model. Which is most effective? Practical? Etc. Join us for this interesting exploration of what might work for your child or student.

Learning Goals:

  1. What is gifted education beyond identification
  2. Understanding the trends in gifted education.
  3. Comparing and contrasting best practices in the classroom and beyond
  4. Learning about the different models of gifted education
  5. Understanding what works and what doesn’t
  6. Understanding the differences in effective gifted vs. multi-exceptional programming
  7. A working knowledge of how to assess these practices
